Dear Parents and Carers,
A very warm welcome back to all our students, parents and carers and staff. I am sure everyone appreciated the chance to enjoy some down time with family and friends and to catch up on some self-care. Welcome back also, to Mrs Baker, who is returning to us since before COVID. Mrs Baker will be providing targeted maths support to identified students.
OC Placement Tests
Online applications for Year 5 opportunity class placement in 2022 opened on 20 April 2021 and will remain open until 5:00pm on 7 May 2021. If you are yet to submit an application and wish to do so, I would suggest that you complete the required documentation promptly. The Unit is very strict on deadlines and no late applications will be considered. Please also return your blue slip from the original note to assist us with cross referencing your child’s application.
Our WPPS ANZAC Day Ceremony was a very moving and respectful occasion, beautifully organised by Mrs Feltscheer and supported by our Year 6 students who conducted the Ceremony. A huge thank you must go to Miriam Methven who has once again made the wreath for us. Colonel Vince delivered the ANZAC message and The Last Post was played by THS and former student, Sierra Russell. Thank you to our special guests, Alister Henskens (local State MP), David Arblaster (Turramurra High Principal) and Lonii Broers (WPPS P&C President), who joined with us to share in our commemoration.
Following the Ceremony, WPPS students assembled on the grass area for the official opening of the new Kindergarten/Year 1 playground. This part of our total Creative Outdoor Learning Space refurbishment received generous State funding through the Community Partnerships Grant and together with school funding, this section of the upgrade was able to proceed. As our State member, it was most appropriate for Mr Henskens to officially cut the ribbon and declare the space open.
New Student Orientation
It is that time of year again when we start activities for next year’s incoming students. Our first event is Fantasy Day, to be held on Thursday 20 May (Week 5) from 9:30am – 11:00am. We will have a special performance from children’s entertainers, Pistachio and the theme will be fairies and pirates. All pre-schoolers are invited to dress up in their favourite fantasy costumes and join West Pymble K-2 students and teachers (who will also be in fancy dress) on this exciting day. Fantasy Day is the first of a comprehensive series of events that will run throughout the year to provide the smoothest possible transition to school for both parents and their children.
All parents who have already submitted their enrolment application and therefore are now on our data base, will receive their invitation to this event via email. For those who are yet to enrol, please do so as early as possible to enable thorough planning and preparations to be in place for next year.
Individual tours are now available for parents wishing to view the school. Please telephone the office on 9144 7584 for an appointment. Our new website also has a virtual tour that you can access. Our website address is https://westpymble-p.schools.nsw.gov.au More information on our new website which is being launched this week can be found in the School News section of this issue of the New Weekly. Thank you to Miss Cooling, our STEM/Technology specialist teacher, who has spent countless hours on the mammoth task of preparing the website to go live.
Ride to School Day.
It was lovely to see so many children this morning and so many parents as well, riding their bikes and scooters to school. At the time of writing this email, all bikes and scooters are parked awaiting their owners who will engage in class-based road safety activities at some stage throughout the day.
Strawberries and Cream on the Green
Mothers’ Day is fast approaching and will be celebrated next Sunday 9 May. As part of WPPS’s recognition of this celebration, our P&C have organised a Mothers’ Day stall. Information was sent out from the P&C last term and the stall will be held on Thursday 6 May. We would like to invite all our mums, grandmas and special ladies to join us at afternoon tea time from 2:00pm, for Strawberries and Cream on the Green. For catering purposes, please send an RSVP email to the office to confirm your attendance email@example.com.
Thank you to all who have already paid their Term 2 fees. Remember that the annual Statement of Account can be paid in instalments, but activity fees must be paid in full by the due date, prior to the activity. Students who have not paid for an activity, will be supervised in a different class for the duration of the activity and given separate work that will meet the same or similar outcomes. As always, anyone who is experiencing financial difficulties should make contact with the office to speak with either the office manager, Michelle Eyre or myself. All enquiries will remain confidential and be discreetly managed.
Kiss and Drop
The new Kiss and Drop signage is up in the Apollo Avenue cul-de-sac. Thank you so much to the P&C for organising this.
I have also received an email from a very disgruntled neighbour in Apollo, who has complaints about the traffic flow, parking across driveways and as a result has requested Ranger assistance. The Ranger has been in attendance for at least two days this week. The fines for breaking the road rules are very hefty, with stopping in the No Stopping zones currently sitting at over $360.
For more information on Kiss and Drop rules, please see the P&C section of this newsletter.
Don't forget Winter Uniforms from Monday 3 May.
Have a safe and happy fortnight and have a happy Mothers’ Day on Sunday week.
Check-in Assessment for Year 4 and Year 6 2021
Students in Year 4 and Year 6 will soon complete a reading and numeracy Check-in Assessment.
The Check-in Assessment is a NSW Department of Education online reading and numeracy assessment available to support schools to assess and monitor students’ learning following last year's period of learning from home.
The Check-in Assessments can supplement existing school practices to identify how students are performing in literacy and numeracy and to help teachers tailor their teaching more specifically to student needs.
All Year 4 and 6 students completed a reading assessment this week and will undertake a numeracy assessment in Week 3.
NAPLAN Testing for Year 3 and Year 5 2021
All students in Years 3 and 5 will undertake NAPLAN testing from 11-21 May 2021. West Pymble PS has been selected to complete all assessments online with the exception of Year 3 Writing, which will be completed as a pencil and paper test. Each student had the opportunity to complete a practice test in Week 9 of Term 1. This allowed the school to check we had the capability to successfully use the system and enabled the students to familiarise themselves with the program.
The following tests will be completed by all students:
Conventions of Language
The schedule is being finalised this week, however if your child is absent for one or more of the tests, make up sessions will be completed wherever possible.
For more information including how to access the public demonstration site, please see the flyer below.
Please don’t hesitate to contact me through the school office if you have any questions.

Stage One Excursion: The Magic Beach at the Riverside Theatre Parramatta
In Week 1, Stage 1 (Year 1 and 2) students were very lucky to take part in an excursion to watch a live performance of The Magic Beach based on the book by Alison Lester. Students have been exploring connections to places in geography, going on a virtual trip around Australia to learn about our country and the special connections people have to it.
The students represented WPPS with pride, enjoying a bus ride, picnic in the park and a wonderful (and hilarious) opportunity to see live theatre. Many thanks to the Stage 1 teachers including Mr Simpson and Mrs Whittaker for their help on the day.
Please enjoy some of the recounts the students completed after our special day.
Stage 1 AP (Acting)
Last Thursday Stage One went on an excursion. We got there by a big bus. I felt really cold. The play we saw was called Magic Beach. My favourite bit was when Sally called Toby, Fish Head. I sat next to Hannah. It was an amazing day. Then we had a practice of the grand opening for the playground.

Yesterday we went on our excursion. All of stage one went. We went to the show. The theatre was called Riverside. The show was the Magic Beach. Before the show started we all went to the bathroom. When the performance started it went all dark. The show was really fun. The characters were called Lucy, Daniel and Sally. There were some funny parts. Then we had our recess. After that we took the bus to get back to school.

Yesterday we went to see the Magic Beach. We went on the bus to get there. It was a 40 minute drive. When we got off the bus we had lunch. After lunch 2W got ready to go into the theatre. When we were ready we sat in our seats. We had to wait for a little bit before the show started. Everyone was very excited. When the lights went out the show started. My favourite part of the show was when the little sister did karate, she got a bucket stuck on her head and when they introduced Fish Head. On the way back I sat next to Jyotsna. Some people fell asleep on the way back.

On Thursday we went on an excursion to the Parramatta Riverside Theatre. First thing in the morning we did a maths test and then we needed to pick a buddy to stay with so we did not get lost. Then at 10:25 we went to the bus and I sat at the back with my friends. It was a long drive so we played ‘Spotto’. When we arrived we went to a park and had lunch there. I had a ham sandwich. After lunch we went into the theatre early and had to wait for a while but I think it was worth it because the play was amazing! There were some really funny parts. After the play we had recess and got on the bus to go back to school.

NSW Premier's Sporting Challenge 2021
This year our school has registered to participate in the NSW Premier’s Sporting Challenge. The NSW Premier's Sporting Challenge (PSC) encourages all students and staff in public schools to be more active, more often by increasing their participation in sport and physical activity.
The purpose of the Challenge is to encourage students to participate in sport and physical activity to lead a healthy lifestyle.
Over a ten week period our school will be monitoring physical activity levels during class time, at recess and lunch as well as during sport lessons. Physical activity outside school hours will also count towards the Challenge award. The aim is to work towards an average at least 60 minutes of activity a day for ten weeks.
Each student in Years 3-6 will be using an online tracker to record their daily physical activity. Whilst K-2 students will work towards a Gold class award level.
We would like to invite families to support us in encouraging students’ healthy use of leisure time and to experience the joy of being active together.
Dear Parents and Carers,
Our next Recognition Ceremony will be held Friday 18 June. Please ensure all merits are handed in to the office by Friday 4 June to allow engraving of medallions.

We are very much looking forward to preparing your healthy lunches!
The Canteen Team,
Wendela, Nada & Paulina
It is great to see everyone back at school and we look forward to a fun filled term two!
We are very excited that the Beach Party themed disco has finally arrived and it is on tonight (Friday 30 April) in the school hall. The junior disco (K to year 2) will be from 4.30 to 6pm and the senior disco (year 3 to 6) will be from 6 to 7.30pm. Entry and exit is via the Apollo Avenue gate only (Tristania and Diana gates will be closed). We request that you do not park on Apollo Avenue to drop off or collect your children from the disco. For safety reasons we are trying to limit motor vehicle traffic due to the number of children and adults entering and exiting the Apollo Avenue gate. If you are concerned you will not make it to the gate in time for pick up, please rest assured that your children will be supervised until they are collected. We look forward to seeing everyone in their favourite beach wear and ready for lots of fun!
New Safety Signage for Apollo Avenue Kiss and Drop
Last year members of the school community raised concerns about the Apollo Avenue turning circle and the potential for an accident as children move to and from waiting cars in the Kiss and Drop zone. The Council was contacted for advice and after observing the Kiss and Drop zone in operation, they recommended new signage, line markings and an instructional banner.
At the end of last year, the council installed signage at the entrance to the turning circle advising drivers to give way to another vehicle, and line markings to indicate the appropriate distance to do this.
- Please wait for the car in front to move before entering the turning circle
- Watch for pedestrians when turning
- Move forward to the furthest available pickup point
- Park legally and don't block drivewaysThe purpose of the Kiss and Drop zone is to enable parents and carers to pick up children safely and quickly. To achieve this, everyone needs to follow the Kiss and Drop procedures when using this zone. Please familiarise yourself with the full list of Kiss and Drop procedures and thank you to everyone who is already following the Kiss and Drop rules.
